What is the purpose of a warning label?

If your job requires you to work around heavy machinery or equipment in Rhode Island, chances are, you have been required to undergo some form of training to prepare you for the types of dangers or hazards you could potentially encounter. While it would be ideal to believe that you or your coworkers would never make a mistake, or that the equipment you are using would never become faulty or defective, it is imperative that you prepare for those situations to better protect yourself.

Warning labels play a unique and significant role in contributing to the safety of yourself and your coworkers. These seemingly simple stickers are strategically placed by manufacturers to provide a reminder of potential dangers and to hopefully elicit a response from you about what you should be doing when you operate the machinery in order to stay safe including wearing the proper safety gear, following protocols and staying sober and aware of your surroundings.

According to Dornbos Sign and Safety, having a bright and appropriately placed warning label decal is often not only a requirement from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, but it can effectively help in preventing injury by providing adequate warning. Thus, if you are injured while using a piece of machinery or equipment that is potentially dangerous, but is void of a proper warning label, you may be entitled to damages because of negligence because there was a defect in how potential dangers were displayed.
