The other driver's insurance may not cover your luxury vehicle

Driving a luxury vehicle is a privilege that usually comes from hard work and success. Unfortunately, if you are involved in a collision while driving the latest and the best vehicle, the other driver's insurance may not be enough to cover your loss, especially if they are uninsured or there are multiple vehicles involved. If you want to drive in luxury then you need to make sure that you have your own coverage sufficient to protect your investment in the event of inadequate or no coverage on the vehicle that hit you.

Sadly, commuting in a luxury vehicle leaves you more at risk for financial hardship if you get into a crash caused by an underinsured or uninsured driver.

Many vehicle policies won't cover your costly car

If you drive a late-model luxury vehicle, the chances are good that you paid a premium for that vehicle when you compare its cost with domestic and economy vehicles. Unfortunately, the insurance and liability laws in Rhode Island look more at the average than at the outliers when it comes to vehicle prices and required coverage.

Many people in Rhode Island will purchase the bare minimum insurance that they have a legal obligation to carry. In terms of property damage coverage, that may mean having only $25,000 worth of protection against property damage claims.

Mechanical and aesthetic repairs to your luxury vehicle could easily exceed that amount, particularly if you have to replace the vehicle. There is also the potential risk of the other driver not having any insurance at all, which might mean that you won't have protection for the damage they cause your vehicle.

Review your policy to protect your investments

One of the best ways you can protect yourself against the bad financial decisions of someone else is to carry the right kind of insurance coverage. Most companies will allow for the purchase of special riders or additional protections for those who wind up in crashes caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver.

An underinsured driver policy will protect you if the other driver's policy doesn't cover the entire cost of your repairs or vehicle replacement. An uninsured driver policy will extend coverage to you that otherwise would not exist at all under Rhode Island insurance laws.

It can be difficult to know if the amount of insurance you have and the kind of policy you purchase is right for your vehicle. Having an attorney review the insurance documents and your financial circumstances can help you make better policy decisions. For those who find themselves dealing with a crash caused by a driver who didn't have insurance or enough of it, good advice can help you find a way to close the gap between the cost of the accident and the coverage currently available to you.
