Why do people leave accident scenes?

Car accidents happen every day. And despite how common they are, car crashes can be incredibly jarring and frightening, especially when they result in serious injuries. However, it is crucial that you stay on the scene and call for help if anyone is hurt.

Unfortunately, not all drivers do this. Too many people flee the accident without asking if the other parties are okay or waiting to speak with the police. Not only is it unlawful in Rhode Island to leave the scene of an accident resulting in injuries, it can make the situation much worse for victims who need help. So, why do people do it? And what happens to these hit-and-run drivers?

Why people flee accident scenes

People may leave an accident for any number of reasons. Typically, these reasons stem from not wanting to get in trouble for something. In some cases, hit-and-run drivers may not want to get caught:

  • Driving drunk
  • Driving without a valid license
  • In possession or under the influence of drugs
  • Driving without insurance
  • Violating terms of probation

There could be other reasons a person may not stop after an accident that have nothing to do with evading authorities. This could include not knowing that another person may be hurt, suffering a medical emergency or being too scared to stop.

However, leaving an injury-causing accident for whatever reason can result serious penalties for a motorist. Penalties include possible imprisonment, fines and license revocation.

Taking action against a hit-and-run driver

It can seem impossible to track down a hit-and-run driver, but it may not be. With the help of an attorney, parties can investigate an accident and secure evidence that helps identify a negligent driver.

Once identified, drivers can face a civil lawsuit filed by victims or loved ones who suffer economic and non-economic damages. A personal injury or wrongful death claim can help those affected by the actions of a hit-and-run driver pursue the compensation they deserve.
