Should rain impact how you drive?

Spring showers may bring flowers, but they can also lead to an increase in motor vehicle accidents. It is a terrifying feeling when your vehicle starts to slip out of control on a wet road.

During a rainstorm, there seem to be two types of drivers; those who do not seem to notice and those who seem terrified. While both may justify their opinion on how to handle wet weather, the safest option often has several parts.

Here’s what you should consider as you determine the safest way to travel when it is raining.

The condition of your vehicle

There may be differing opinions on the best approach to safe driving in the rain, but if your vehicle is not in good repair, you will have a difficult time. As you prepare for spring weather conditions, look over your car.

Pay special attention to your tires. If they are showing wear from the winter, it could be an excellent time to consider replacing them. Smooth tires will not grab the road and could lead to losing control of the vehicle.

Watch the cars around you

Rather than trying to move with traffic, pay more attention to making sure there is adequate space between your car and other vehicles. If you drive a small or lightweight vehicle, make sure there is more space.

When it is raining, even if you have new tires, it will take longer to stop. The smaller and lighter your vehicle is, the less weight your car has helping it meet the road.

Always allow yourself extra time when you are diving in inclement weather. It is better to take your time and arrive safely.
