Are Rhode Island roadways getting safer?

After years of congestion trying to travel from one place to another, seeing less traffic has been a welcome sight for many in Rhode Island.

With more people working from home and others who are simply out of work, residents are seeing a dramatic drop in the number of people on the road, even during rush hours. Although other states are reporting dangerous driving on their open roads, Rhode Island is not experiencing the same trend.

Here's how the pandemic has changed traffic for residents of Rhode Island.

Record drops in speeding and accidents

In addition to being frustrating, heavy traffic often comes with a significant increase in accidents. Very simply, more people on the road creates more opportunities for someone to make a mistake.

Now, with fewer people on the road, officers are reporting that they have responded to less than one-third of the accidents they saw at the same time last year. Additionally, officers are reporting a dramatic decrease in the number of cars stopped for speeding.

It still pays to be cautious

Often, motorists count on the cars around them to determine how fast to drive, especially when used to driving in traffic. High speeds can lead to dangerous accidents.

When you are driving down an unusually open road, pay attention to your speed. It may be easier to get going faster than you intend when there is no one in front of you, but accidents can happen quickly, even when there are no other cars on the road.

Also, with more people taking the opportunity to walk outside, it is more important to watch for pedestrians. While vehicle accidents are trending down, pedestrian fatalities have increased since last year.
